State Hospitals
The Department of State Hospitals (DSH) manages the California state hospital system, which provides mental health services to patients admitted into DSH facilities. The department strives to provide effective treatment in a safe environment and in a fiscally responsible manner.
DSH oversees five state hospitals – Atascadero, Coalinga, Metropolitan (in Los Angeles County), Napa and Patton.
California Forced or Involuntary Sterilization Compensation Program:
Individuals who lived in state-run hospitals, homes and institutions through 1979 were sterilized, leaving them unable to have biological children. As a result of Assembly Bill 137, the Forced or Involuntary Sterilization Compensation Program was created to financially compensate survivors of state-sponsored sterilization. The California Victim Compensation Board (CalVCB) administers the program. Please visit here to learn more about the program or to download an application form.
The California Memorial Project:
The mission of the California Memorial is to honor and restore dignity to those individuals who lived and died in state hospitals and institutions. Its goals include the restoration of cemeteries or graves where individuals from state institutions are buried, and preserving the histories of individuals who lived in state institutions.
