DSH - Napa: Family & Friend Resources

This page is designed to answer basic questions for families and friends to support and communicate with the patients housed in our facility. Family and friends are encouraged to participate in the wellness, recovery, and treatment planning process of the patients in our care.

Depositing Funds for a Patient

DSH offers deposit services for family and friends of our patients to send funds to their accounts. Patients may use these funds for a wide range of purchases, including those at the facility's commissary.

To Deposit by Mail:

Personal checks, cashier’s checks or money orders should be made payable to:

Sending Mail and Packages to a Patient

We welcome family and friends to send mail and packages to patients. This section explains how to ensure your items reach a patient in a safe and timely manner.

Letters are scanned by an electronic device. Those containing anything other than correspondence will be returned to the sender.

All incoming mail and packages will be opened and searched for contraband by Hospital Police.

Sending Packages

DSH-Napa can only accept packages from vendors or online retailers and must be received through the U.S. Postal Service or common carrier. Packages delivered by visitors or assembled from home will not be accepted.

DSH Napa is currently offering My Care Pack Canteen Services to patients who reside at the hospital as well as to family and friends who prefer to use this service to order items for a patient. To use this service, please visit www.mycarepack.com.

Please note:

  • Not all products advertised online are allowed at DSH-Napa. See the Statewide Contraband List for items that are not allowed in patients' possession. This includes items restricted to use under supervision or items prohibited as a condition of parole.
Each patient is allowed to receive eight packages per calendar quarter. (January-March, April-June, July-September, October-December). For orders arriving in multiple packages, each package will count toward the quarterly total.

Packages shall neither exceed 30 pounds in weight nor exceed the size limitations of 24 inches long, 19 inches wide, and 12 inches tall. The hospital will not accept packages from the post office or shipping agent that exceed these weight or size limitations.

Calling a Patient

Patients may use the public telephone in their unit to make outgoing collect phone calls. A patient may also receive incoming calls if they or another patient is available to answer the public telephone.

If you know what unit your loved one is on, you can call the hospital's main number at (707) 253-5000 and ask for the unit payphone’s number.

Friends and Family Support Group

Who we are:

The Family & Friends Support Group (FFSG) of Napa State Hospital is a family-led group providing support, guidance and understanding to its members on mental health issues. Meetings are an opportunity to learn more about the hospital and the many services offered to your family member. Participants engage with and listen to presentations by mental health treatment experts. Please note: This group is not associated with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Participation in NAMI is not required; however, it is encouraged as a resource and additional support system.

In-person meetings are held in the Volunteer Center on hospital grounds from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 am. Virtual meetings are held via Microsoft Teams from noon to 1:00 p.m. The meeting link is shared with members in advance of every meeting.
